    How council tax is calculated

    1. Find your council tax band. Find your property's council tax band. England and Wales: use the gov.uk band checker. Scotland: use the Scottish Assessors portal.
    2. Find your council's Band D charge. Find your local council's Band D charge for 2026/27, or use the national average of £2,392 for England.
    3. Apply your band multiplier. Multiply the Band D charge by your band's multiplier. For example, Band E in England is 11/9 of Band D.
    4. Apply discounts or exemptions. Apply any discount or exemption, such as the 25% single person discount.
    5. Work out monthly instalments. Divide by 10 for the standard monthly instalment, or by 12 if you ask your council to spread it.

Council tax is a major household cost alongside income tax, National Insurance, and for homeowners stamp duty. Use our net worth calculator to see how council tax fits your overall finances, or check UK salary after tax to compare take-home pay with your council tax bill.

    Frequently asked questions

How much is council tax in 2026/27?+
The average Band D council tax in England for 2026/27 is £2,392 a year, up £111 (4.9%) on last year, per MHCLG. Wales averages £2,283 and Scotland's latest average was £1,579, though every council sets its own rate.
How are council tax bands decided?+
Your band is based on what your property would have sold for on 1 April 1991 in England and Scotland, or 1 April 2003 in Wales. England and Scotland have eight bands (A to H); Wales has nine (A to I).
What are the council tax band multipliers?+
Each band pays a fixed share of Band D. In England and Wales the shares run in ninths: Band A is 6/9, Band D is 9/9, and Band H is 18/9, which is double Band D. Scotland uses the same shares for Bands A to D but higher ones for E to H since 2017, so Band H in Scotland is 245% of Band D.
How much is the single person discount?+
If you are the only adult in your home you get 25% off. On an England Band D bill of £2,392, that brings it down to £1,794 a year, about £149.50 a month over 12 instalments.
Who does not pay council tax?+
Homes where everyone is a full-time student are exempt, as are homes where all residents are disregarded, for example people who are severely mentally impaired. People on low incomes can apply for Council Tax Reduction through their council.
Why is my band different from my neighbour's?+
Bands reflect 1991 values, not today's prices, so similar homes can sit in different bands. If you think yours is wrong you can challenge it for free through the Valuation Office Agency in England and Wales, or the Scottish Assessors in Scotland. Note your band could go up as well as down.
Can I pay council tax monthly?+
Yes. The default is 10 monthly instalments from April to January, but you can ask your council to spread the bill over 12 months, which lowers each payment.
Does Scotland or Wales work differently?+
Scotland uses 1991 values like England but charges more at Bands E to H, and adds separate Scottish Water charges. Wales revalued in 2003 and has an extra top band, Band I, at 21/9 of Band D.
How do I find my exact bill?+
Look up your band with the official checker, then find your council's 2026/27 Band D rate on its website and multiply by your band's share, or enter your council's Band D figure in the calculator above for an exact result.
